  Miles Davis’ “Young Man with a Horn” (Blue Note LP
5013) was released in 1952 and was the only official album recorded or released that year, at a time in his career while
he was struggling with heroin addiction. This was the first of three 10" LPs recorded by Miles for Blue Note in the
early 1950s.
  Miles Davis' recordings of the early 1950s tend to be overlooked because of his erratic lifestyle of
the period and because they predated his “first classic quintet” – but what he recorded during this
era was often quite classic.
  The material here runs the gamut from straight bop (Dizzy Gillespie’s
“Woody ’n’ You”) to standards (“How Deep is the Ocean” by Irving Berlin) to a
Swedish folk tune (“Dear Old Stockholm”). Jackie McLean’s “Donna” had been recorded for
Prestige the previous year as “Dig”. 
  “Young Man with a Horn” is among the
earliest hard bop recordings and would indirectly influence the modern mainstream music of the 1960s.
